This project involves combining three units in a cooperative apartment building with views of the city from the tree tops near the Washington National Cathedral.
The client is interested in clean, modern detailing and warm, inviting materials and colors to have the space accentuate a collection of artwork and contemporary furniture. Keeping the spaces open and airy with lots of natural light maximizes the views.
The approach taken was to remove a great deal of the narrow corridors, partitions, and doors and define the spaces with a 'furniture-type' solution.
The modern spiral stair is square in plan, with built-in cabinets below and glass rails. The dressing area includes free-standing custom-built furniture with drawers, closets and a seating alcove.
Large sliding panels have replaced narrow doors to help open the flow while allowing for privacy. Judicious use of stone, glass, and natural wood keeps the modern design from becoming too cold and industrial-looking. Attention to detail is paramount to the success of the project.
