Sherwood Park Recreation Center
Washington, DC

BELL Architects, PC, Grotheer & Company, AB Consultants, Brandes & Cassagnol and Lewis Scully Gionet, a land planning and landscape firm, teamed with the Warren-Young Group to win a design-build competition for this $4.1 million recreation facility on the 2.5 acre parcel of land adjacent to the Capitol Hill Historic District one block south of the H Street corridor between 9th and 10th streets, NE. The design team showed great flexibility in designing various solutions to the siting and massing of the building.

This new two-story facility was designed to respond to the architectural materials and relate to the development patterns of the neighborhood while retaining the sense of a pavilion-in-the-park. Precedent for the selection of a light brick was found at other neighborhood buildings, such as the Lovejoy School. Environmental sensitivity was considered and implemented by using recycled materials, and minimizing vinyl flooring, paint and other petroleum-based interior finishes.

The design of the park has been fast-tracked in order to shorten the time for completion. Significant street trees were protected and maintained by the siting of the building. BELLArchitects utilized 3-D object-oriented CAD, integrated into the design and construction document process to remain flexible and efficient.
