The project entailed limited restoration of this prominent c.1865 building in an urban area near the heart of the Capitol Hill Historic District and along the Pennsylvania Avenue commercial corridor in South-East Washington.
David Bell and Scott Knight worked in conjunction with the ‘Friends of the Old Naval Hospital’ to assist with identifying historic fabric and appropriate treatment. They conducted secondary-source research and on-site investigation of the building to identify historic resources, assess condition, and determined preservation zones in preparation for future work in determining treatment and use.
BELLArchitects was hired to create restoration documents for the wood portico facing south, cast iron stair, wood windows and doors, and brick and stone restoration. The team utilized on-site investigation and photographic evidence was utilizing to recreate and restore portions of the building to their configuration from the turn of the 20th century. Two custom post mounted lighting fixtures were designed based on early photographs and the extant, ornamental posts. Windows and doors on the first three levels of the south façade were also designed for restoration with thermal upgrades. Scott Knight of BELLArchitects provided daily inspection services during construction.
