BELLArchitects was hired by Sierra Construction to do site adaptation drawings for two new US Post Office Stations at Gore and Linden, VA. These were built on the Postal Services Small Standard prototype CAD. Each station was programmed based on the needs of the community, with variations in the box lobbies.
The plans were altered to accommodate variations in the program and respond to each sites opportunities and constraints. The two sites were very different in their topography and orientation to the main thoroughfare. The Gore facility was a relatively flat site, lower than the main roadway and accessed from one side. The Linden facility had a more difficult site, with a corner lot configuration and the existing grade sloping up, away from the main roadway. The solution required a new turn lane from the main thoroughfare and the rear of the building to be built into the hillside with retaining walls at the loading area.
BELLArchitects worked directly for the contractor, in a design-build approach, coordinating disciplines during the construction documents phase of the design with minimal involvement during construction.
