Eastern Market
Washington, DC

Detail of Eastern Market, Washington, DCEastern Market is one of the best known and beloved landmarks in the Capitol Hill area of Washington, DC. Its notoriety and significance extend beyond its physical characteristics. It was built in two distinct periods; the original building in the 1870s, designed by Adolph Cluss; and the center and north hall addition in the early 1900s, designed by Snowden Ashford. The building underwent significant renovations of its roof, doors and windows in the 1970s utilizing alternate materials (ie. synthetic slate shingles at the roof).

Since that time, this Local and National Historic Landmark has been the subject of numerous studies and proposed alterations. During this period there has been a lack of consensus for the site and the building has suffered from deferred maintenance, extreme use and general aging. Some of the alternate materials used in the renovation have not lasted as long as the historically accurate replacement materials and methods would have.

The DC Government hired Heery, International and BELLArchitects to focus on key aspects of the building and its condition and move forward with steps to restore and enhance the landmark.
